Trying out Batman: Zero Year Again

Around the time that I fell off of Justice League my interest in other DC books was also waning. I still read a few, but that number was dropping off quite a lot.

One title that I was really enjoying was Scott Snyder's and Greg Capullo's Batman. I greatly enjoyed Court of Owls, and absolutely loved Death of the Family (Joker has always been one of my favorite villains) but for some reason, Zero Year just wasn't clicking with me.  I can tell you I made it up to issue 27, and then I got 28 (the preview to Batman: Eternal). According to my Comixology account I purchased 28 on April 8, 2014. I didn't realize it had been that long since I had gotten a Batman issue.  I think part of the problem was just my general pessimism about DC.

Warning some spoilers ahead

And then I just didn't go back to it. Eventually I decided I would wait for a 99¢ sale and at that point catch up. That time finally came a couple weeks ago and I bought every issue from 29-38. That includes the end of Zero Year and the first part of Snyder's second Joker story, Endgame (which I'm really excited to read).

I started the story over, and though I felt better about the first half than when I originally read it, I definitely enjoyed the second arc of Zero Year more. The Riddler has never been my favorite villain but I don't mind him. Here, seeing him not only challenge Batman, but actually beat Batman was amazing. I'm so used to the "Bat-God" who never truly fails that this was a breath of fresh air.

I think it clicked with me how much I was enjoying it when Riddler said his iconic line "Riddle me this Batman..." Somehow, I had completely forgotten about that line and seeing it unexpectedly like that nearly gave me goosebumps (something that reading never does to me).

If you haven't read this story, and you're a Batman fan (or comics fan in general) I would recommend you try it out. Unfortunately the Comixology sale is over (though DC is doing more).

I would definitely read more of the Zero Year time frame if it were available. I wouldn't be waiting on a sale to get it though.
